Jeff Martin // Buddha Bar Byron Bay Brewery

“Wow” is the word on high rotation, as Kate and I make our euphoric way back to our Byron Bay accommodation after witnessing one of the best lives musical performances either of us has ever seen.

I am a long-time fan of The Tea Party, the Canadian rock band with blues, progressive rock, Indian and Middle Eastern influences Jeff Martin fronts.  I have seen them live many times, but as we drove to Byron Bay on the 29th of November 2012, Kate and I really had no idea what to expect from the solo tour. We arrived at the funky Buddha Bar at the Byron Bay Brewery, just in time to see the man himself preparing back stage, a mere five metres away, looking calm and every bit the rock star he is.

Our waiting was soon over, as Jeff Martin walked onto the stage with a 12 string acoustic and a confident swagger, I couldn’t help but squeal like a 13 year old at a One Direction Concert.

The attentive audience was then introduced to an accompanying female artist.  In Martin’s usual relaxed, slightly quirky, story telling manner, he revealed the angelic voice of songstress, Kimberley Dawn Lysons (remember that name), first caught his attention at a previous gig.  Spawning from this, a new collaboration, “The Band Dawn” was born.

The following hour was, in all honesty, one of the most amazing live music moments we have ever experienced. The sounds erupting from the stage were soulful and joyously epic, and left the crowd wanting more. However, a sample of the soon to be released album is all we were treated to.  As Jeff took the reins and flew solo for the second half.

A charismatic Jeff Martin treated the audience to a mix of his favourite songs from his bands, The Tea Party and Jeff Martin 777.  Highlights were the inclusion of the crowd pleasing ‘The Bazaar’, which got everyone jumping and cheering, then the stirring rendition of ‘Requiem’, where his vocals soared unrestrained in a fully-fledged heart and soul – no holds barred performance.   His second to none guitar skills, faultless deep resonating vocals left many hand on mouth amazed.

Jeff Martin has nothing to prove to anyone, rather he continues to exemplify his depth and talent as a musician; and that his fire for making breathtaking music still burns strong.

You will need:

125g softened butter

1/2 cup sugar

2 eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 c Almond meal

1 c GF Plain flour

Your favourite jam.

Preheat the oven to 180.  Line baking trays with baking paper.  Cream the butter and the sugar, either with an electric beater or by hand.  This should be light and fluffy, before adding eggs one at a time, and then the vanilla.

Sift the almond meal and flour, and mix together in a separate bowl, gradually fold this through the  ‘wet’ mix, until well combined.

Place the mixture back into the refrigerator  for 10-15mins mins just to make it a bit easier to place on the baking tray.  Scoop mixture onto a baking tray,  leaving some room either side as they will grow, use a spoon or a thumb print to create a well for the jam.  Add a generous portion of jam to the biscuits.

Place in the oven for 10-15mins, when ready the Jam will be melted and the biscuit slightly golden.

Enjoy x

Have you got a favourite biscuit recipe? – let me know or send it on through x

Your heart …. my heart

It is the same click of a shutter and the audible wind of the film that he touched, your Father, however many years ago.  He would have taken photos of surrounds that look so differently then than they do now.  Slung over his neck a moment stopped. His heart would have been filled with love for you and your family documenting all those moments, those milestones.  His joy when the prints returned.  The family albums filled. Now sealed away.

Time has since past.

We first met when I photographed your beautiful daughter expecting with her first child, I later had the privilege of photographing you as you renewed your wedding vows to your amazing wife. I have seen your grandson from a few weeks old to now a little boy who is turning two.  Your family is simply beautiful and shares a generosity that I can not describe.

For all the moments of gratitude and grace I have experienced, for you to so kindly share a piece of your family history with me I am indebted. As it is now the same click of the shutter and the audible wind of the film that I touch.

The magic of film, the mechanical beauty of your Fathers’ camera is a treasure.  I promise to take care of it.

Matt, I took your Father’s camera with me on my first trip to Tasmania, my first trip as someone’s fiancee, my first time seeing snow.  All of these moments I recorded on your Father’s camera. A week later, I was able to relive the joy as I received my developed film.

Matt, I am humbled by your gift ~ forever it will be precious.  x
